Face authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) facing lots of heat about the security of bio-metrics they collect from the citizens of India, now they have come up with new security measure to protect the Aadhar. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced to rollout Face authentication feature, as an additional mode of authentication, from September 15.

The phased rollout by the Aadhaar-issuing body will be brought to function with telecom service providers.

To give an extra security layer, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced making facial recognition compulsory, under which on-the-spot live pictures will be taken for every authentication that requires Aadhaar.

The rollout of the feature was already postponed twice, The Authority had earlier planned to rollout face recognition feature from July 1, a target that was later pushed to August 1.

The UIDAI has said that specific instructions for authentication agencies other than telecom service providers will be issued soon.

Services like purchasing a new mobile SIM, bank account opening, the public distribution system, office attendance at government offices, which commonly use Aadhaar authentication will now have to implement this added security feature.

Talking about the feature UIDAI said “Face authentication is the latest technology, and provides added security. After we hit 10 percent of authentication transactions, we will have a review of any possible shortfalls that we notice in the system or processes. Thereafter, we will expand, within telecom and also to other service areas where separate instructions shall be issued regarding the implementation of face recognition.”

This feature will help those whose fingerprint did not work while authenticating the Aadhar and they have the genuine reasons for that.

If you see there have been numerous instances where people have been excluded from Aadhaar authentication as their fingerprints are worn out due to old age, or since they are involved in manual labour or agriculture.
